Letoya Johnstone is one of the most real people on social media, she doesn’t live her lie, she doesn’t hold her truth or sugarcoat it, she’s always real as it gets.
The outspoken and vocal transgender yet subtle who is one of the talented fashion stylists in Kenya has opened up about her insecurities and her tough life in Kibera slums.
Letoya isn’t afraid to say or let the whole know that she’s from the ghetto, she embraces it because at the moment she’s not in a position to change that but when she does, she’ll speak all about it in the future.
Speaking about her challenges as a transgender woman after she came out to Cynthia Mukanzi for People Daily, Letoya opened up about the struggle.
“Coming out as a transgender was such a dilemma. Before I came to understand who I really was, I struggled with my identity. Growing up, people never talked about being transgender and what it means, they just assumed I was gay, yet I wasn’t.
Ten years ago, after learning more about my identity and getting to know who I really am, I started identifying openly as a woman and using the pronouns she/her,” Letoya Johnstone said in part talking with People Daily’s Cynthia Mukanzi.
She’s even been suicidal in the past because of the challenges she’s gone through.
“I have experienced challenges that pushed me to the brink of a suicide attempt. However, I would like to stay here until the end of my time. I don’t want to give power to weaknesses and I won’t quit,” she continued.
fashion stylist Letoya Johnstone opens up about living in poverty
Johnstone confessed to the inability of securing work despite being a certified fashion stylist and a psychosocial counselor just because she came out as a transgender. Johnstone has really gone through it all.
“When I used to present myself as a man, I would get jobs, but no one wanted to work with me once I came out and yet I am a very hard-working individual,” she went on to explain herself on the exclusive People Daily interview.
For now, though, she’s grateful for the little things in life that she can get her hands on and she’s specifically grateful for her trip in the Coast.
Letoya took her time and went to social media and opened up about experiencing the rich good lifestyle for the first time.
She apparently didn’t know it was real because she’s never had the opportunities or the finance to experience the same.
She says the little things like being by the beach and enjoying the luxury of a fancy hotel and her enjoying it for the very first is something she can’t take for granted.

She took to social media to explain how she felt and grateful to the person who made it happen without mentioning names.
“One thing about me is that I am a very confident human being. Sometimes I say things so direct till others confuse it with insecurity.
One true thing is that I came from extreme poverty. These new things like being by the beach or in the fancy hotels is something that scares me. I have never believed that it is real.
I am humbled by the lord’s work in my life. I am a very grateful person and I can say thank you until I bore you. It’s just whom I am. I have never gotten free things in my life. That’s why I always doubt it whenever those beautiful moments comes.
I just want the youths to look at me and feel confident knowing that you are complete as a human being when you are poor, financially challenged or being kicked out of your rental house. Be confident enough to share those moments as you always post about good foods and awesome sandy beaches. There is no shame.
I have nothing but look at me. I stand tall and raise my hands hopping that I will one day be picked. That day I will levitate pulling others up with me. !
