Dancehall artiste KRG The Don has come forward to explain why he chose to support President William Ruto’s 2024 Finance Bill, which was withdrawn after deadly protests.
In a recent interview, KRG revealed that his backing of the bill was rooted in a pragmatic view of the country’s financial obligations.
KRG stated that his support was driven by the bill’s potential to help Kenya manage and pay off its national debt.
“That’s why I had this support because I saw that we will suffer for another year, but after that, we will have paid off a lot of debts,” he explained.
The artiste also emphasized his opposition to street protests, citing the potential for loss of life and destruction of property.
“I didn’t see if there was a need to shed blood because life is something you can’t recover no matter how much money you have,” he said.
“I can’t send someone’s child to die for anything in this country, let alone the leadership, it has reached that level of people going to commit suicide even if life has become difficult.”
Addressing the backlash from the public, KRG acknowledged that while he received many messages and calls, he was not subjected to the insults many anticipated.
“I have received a lot of your greetings and some of them were good, but I am a people person, all those who called me when they heard it was Bughaa were really happy. People were saying that I should be insulted, no one insulted me, if that’s what maybe people expected to receive only a lot of calls,” he said.
In a surprising turn of events, President William Ruto later rejected the 2024/25 financial bill.
The President acknowledged the widespread opposition from Kenyans and noted that while the government had plans to generate more revenue for development, alternative solutions would need to be found.
