Last week Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) disbursed royalties to musicians via M-Pesa, most artistes were each paid Ksh 2,530 as their two months earnings.
Khaligraph Jones was among first musicians to publicly complain about MCSK mocking musicians with peanut pay. The rapper said that he would rather have people pirate his music than have MCSK sending him peanuts as royalties.
“MCSK Siku Moja Tutakuja Kuwavuruga uko Mbaya Sana, Msijaribu kunitumia izi peanuts tena, Infact I have given Authorization for my Music to be pirated, Don’t collect money on my Behalf anymore, Nisiskie mmeshika mtu akicheza Wimbo zangu kwa street, msinitumie izo peanuts zenu tena, The OG shall be respected #mrinternational,” wrote a vexed Khaligraph Jones.

MCSK didn’t issue a comprehensive statement explaining the distribution. The royalty collecting body only tweeted and wrote on Facebook about the distributions, they later deleted the tweets.
“We have distributed royalties to all our members (13,967) general distribution. Its PPP distribution (Performance in Public Places) this are collections from public places for only 2 months. Please Note that we haven’t received a dime from any broadcasters who exploit music,” MCSK said in a tweet that was later deleted.
Khaligraph has now threaten to storm MCSK office if the royalty collecting body fails to issue a ‘proper’ statement on the distribution.
Taking to social media, Khaligraph wrote;
“Clarification post, It should be understood that When I made a complain about MCSK underpaying Artists, I wasn’t only speaking for myself but On behalf of Everyone else especially the young artists who are grinding Everyday and releasing Hits but getting nothing In return when these guys are busy harassing People with Businesses and collecting money from them, We are waiting for a proper statement from them(MCSK) with a proper explanation as to why this is happening and where all the Money is going to, not with a Tweet or a Facebook post, Put a press conference or something , then after that Pay us what you owe, Kama si Ivo Tunakuja Uko kwa Ofisi zenu, The OG shall Be respected #mrinternational #respecttheogs”
