Kenyan-American singer sues Tanasha for breach of contract in music collabo

Brittany Jones, a Kenyan-American singer, has filed a lawsuit against socialite and musician Tanasha Donna, seeking over Ksh618,000 approximately USD 4,838.87 in compensation for an alleged breach of a music collaboration agreement.

Jones claims that Tanasha, along with an associate named Muema, failed to honor their agreement, resulting in significant financial losses.

According to the lawsuit, the collaboration was formalized on November 12, 2021, following an initial payment of USD 1,020 approximately Ksh130,355 transferred by Jones to Muema via Mpesa on November 11, 2021.

The agreement stipulated that Tanasha would contribute a verse to their joint song, participate in the video shoot, assist in promoting the song, and transfer all rights of the song to Jones.

In return, Jones agreed to pay Tanasha Ksh200,000 and cover all costs related to the audio and video production. The payment to Tanasha was to be made in two installments: Ksh100,000 upfront and the remaining amount before the video shoot.

Despite Jones adhering to her part of the agreement, she alleges that Tanasha has shown no intent to fulfill her obligations for nearly three years, even after receiving a formal demand notice.

Jones’ lawyer asserts that Tanasha has neither provided the agreed-upon verse nor participated in the video shoot planned to take place in Kenya.

In her lawsuit, Jones is also seeking reimbursement for USD 472.50/Ksh60,385 spent on airfare from Houston to Nairobi for the video shoot.

Additionally, she is demanding compensation of USD 3,096.37/Ksh396,000 for accommodation and other expenses incurred during her stay in Nairobi.

Furthermore, Jones is looking to recover USD 250 (Ksh32,000) from Muema, accusing him of fraud and misrepresentation. Jones claims that Muema received clothes worth USD 250 from her, promising to refund the amount but failing to do so upon delivery.

Jones is asking the court to award her a total of USD 4,838.87/Ksh618,403 from Tanasha and Muema, along with any other compensation the court deems appropriate for the breach of contract.

The case underscores the complexities and potential pitfalls of international music collaborations, especially when agreements are not honored, leading to financial and professional setbacks for the parties involved.
