J’Something who is a member of the award-winning group Micasa has released a song exclusively dedicated to the victims of gender-based violence and xenophobia and you can’t help but commend him for the great work he has done on the record that he shared on social media.

I know this song too doesn’t solve anything but I would like to use my gifts to shine a light on something I believe should’ve never happened and something that as a South African really shattered my heart.

J’Something on his latest song dedicated to Uyinene, Xenophobia and victims of gender-based violence

J’Something, sharing on a lengthy post on social media opened up saying that the song was inspired by the rape and murder of UCT(University of Cape Town) student, Uyinene Mrwetyana at a Post Office in Claremont and the killing of foreign nationals around the same time.

“Last year I wrote this song when a girl whom I didn’t know tragically passed away and left all of us in shock and filled the nation with sadness. I had no idea what to do that day and the days following … then there was the xenophobic attacks around the same time and I felt so useless not knowing how to get involved and we tried to speak about it and post things etc which I knew wouldn’t really help the situation.” J’Something’s lengthy post read in part.

Happily married J'Something wrote the song one night out of frustration of what was going on in his beloved country but chose not to release it immediately. Photo credit: Instagram/jsomethingmusic

Explaining how he came about to write the song, the star shared that he wrote the song in one night out of deep sadness and frustration but didn’t release it for fear of how people would have perceived his intentions. He not only dedicates this song to the late Uyinene but to so many others that are sadly being killed daily and don’t make the news.

“One night out of frustration and deep sadness I got into the studio to express myself and did this song. I never released it last year out of fear of sharing … unsure of how it would land and worried about people’s opinions. Today I would like to present to you with this song and pay tribute not only Uyinene, but so many others that are being killed daily. I know this song too doesn’t solve anything but I would like to use my gifts to shine light on something I believe should’ve never happened and something that as a South African really shattered my heart” he added.
