Wayne Rooney returns to Old Trafford on Sunday September 17th as his club Everton goes head to head with Manchester United.
Rooney left United for Everton on a free transfer, at the same time Everton sold Romelu Lukaku to Man United for a staggering £75m or Kes 10.5 billion.
In his address to the press, José Mourinho acknowledged that Rooney is a Manchester United legend thanks to his record during the 13 years that he played for Red Devils.
“Sometimes the word legend comes too easily but he’s a real legend of the club. The number of appearances, goals, trophies – clearly he’s one of the most important players in the history of Manchester United. I think the stadium will show him the respect he deserves. I hope before the match and after but not during it,” Mourinho said.
The Man United manager also had unpleasant words to say to Lukaku as Rooney returns to Old Trafford. He said that Lukaku might not live to break Rooney’s record 253 goals for Red Devils. Mourinho explained that his was due to age difference between the two strikers.
“Wayne arrived much earlier [in age]. He spent probably 10 years of his career in a different Premier League to the one you have now, where it was easier to score goals. [Also] the difference between the top teams and the others [and] the profile of the competition. Now it’s much more defensive and more difficult,” Mourinho explained.
