Jada Pinkett and Will Smith have been making appearances in public together but apparently they have been living completely separate lives since 2016.
In a clip from her forthcoming NBC News primetime special with Hoda Kotb, Pinkett Smith explained that they had not previously gone public with their separation because they were not ready yet.
Pinkett noted that they are still trying to figure out between the two of us, how to be in partnership.
“How do we present that to people? We hadn’t figured that out,” she said.
The 52-year-old actress and her 55-year-old husband have been married since 1997. Pinkett Smith said they are not legally divorced.
Their marriage has come under scrutiny during the period she says they have been apart.
In July 2020, singer August Alsina revealed that he had been romantically involved with Pinkett Smith, something she confirmed during an episode with her husband on “Red Table Talk.”
“I got into an entanglement with August. were going through a very difficult time when it occurred,” Pinkett said.
Pinkett Smith told NBC News that her marriage to Will Smith fractured because of a lot of things.
“I think by the time we got to 2016, we we both just exhausted with trying. I think we were both kind of still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be,” Pinkett Smith said.
She said she “made a promise” that there would never be a reason for her and Smith to divorce “and I just haven’t been able to break that promise,” she said.
The revelation was a bombshell given that Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at Oscar award gala on March 27, 2023, after the comedian made a joke about Pinkett’s clean-shaven head.
Will Smith walked up to Chris Rock on stage and smacked him in front of millions of viewers.
“Keep my wife’s name out of your f**king mouth!” Will Smith shouted at Chris Rock.
Will Smith slapped Chris Rock for making a joke about Jada Pinkett and warned him against ‘calling his wife’s name’. And the funny thing is that at that moment they were already separated. Damn! Pinkett and Smith are really great actors.
