The Independent Electrol and Boundaries Commissioners,IEBC, have on Tuesday,17,2016 appeared before the Justice and Legal affairs committee to answer allegations of misappropriation of up to four billion shillings during the purchase of the BVR kits..our source at Parliament reveals.
The IEBC BVR kits failed to deliver during the last elections. There were also allegations that the procurement of the said kits didn’t not follow the required procedural steps.
IEBC is under pressure from the CORD coalition and the opposition for what they say,is lack of confidence in the current team to foresee and referee fair elections come 2017.
This pressure has resulted to now Protests every Monday, but yesterday’s were marred by chaos, and rampant police brutality. CORD’s wish is to have IEBC disbanded and new commission constituted and have vowed to fight on until that happens.
Pressure has been mounted on IEBC commissioners to resign from office. The IEBC commissioners who appeared before the justice and legal affairs committee today over issues of misappropriation of funds had it rough as there were indirect suggestions for them to resign.
The chairman of the justice and legal affairs committee Samuel chepkonga noted that the law via the Constitution was clear on how to remove the commissioners from office but urged the commissioners to be ready for peaceful dialogue with the stakeholders such as cord being that there are credibility issues against them.
The chairman of the IEBC in his response was very adamant that they are ready to conduct the 2017 general elections and will then leave office having done their best to restore confidence that people of Kenya lack against IEBC. The big questions remains is the IEBC as presently constituted fit to conduct the 2017 general elections?
