Gidi Gidi has opened up about how late president Daniel Moi’s regime was uncomfortable with his hit song ‘Unbwogable’ which was the main campaign song for the opposition in the runup to 2002 general election.
For starters, Gidi Gidi is one half of the famed Gidi Gidi Maji Maji rap group which dominated music scene in early 2000s.
Speaking during an interview with Daniel Ndambuki alias Churchill on the weekly Churchill Live Show on NTV, Gidi revealed that officials from president Moi’s regime approached them to corrupt the lyrics to their popular song.
The rapper said Moi’s men offered them a whopping Ksh 10 million to corrupt the song, this was ten times more what the opposition had paid them to use their song.
“I did not write that song for political gain. I was singing it to challenge myself as I was going through several challenges at the time. But it became a hit and politicians ran away with it. (Opposition party) Narc paid us Ksh 800,000 to use the song. One day two men approached me and Maji, they introduced themselves as people from State House. They asked us to go and sing another song with a version that praises Kanu, in exchange for Ksh 10 million. We consulted my uncle and he advised us to decline the offer,” said Gidi Gidi.
The tide then was against KANU regime which had ruled the country for 39 years since Kenya got its independence from Britain.
The then opposition leader Mwai Kibaki defeated KANU’s candidate Uhuru Kenyatta to win the 2002 presidential election.
