Radio Jambo presenter and former musician Joseph Ogidi aka Gidi Gidi has opened up about his famous song ‘Unbwogable’ which was released over 20 years ago.
Gidi Gigi composed ‘Unbwogable’ hit song together with his former music partner Julius Owino aka Maji Maji both of whom have now retired from music.
The song was strongly associated with politics, something that Gidi Gidi completely refutes.
“Unbwogable was made in 2002, during the 2002 elections. Many people associate it with the elections of that time, although for us it was not about the elections,” Gidi said in an interview with KTN Home.
The former musician revealed that many hardships in life pushed him and Maji Maji to make the song which became a hit across Africa.
Gidi said at that time he was in the university and Maji Maji had not managed to make money despite their hard work in music.
“I was at KCA university. Maji Maji came and asked me ‘what are we going to do now?’ We just made an album and we still don’t get money,” Gidi remarked.
“I had decided to go back to college and continue my education, in fact I had already given up and said I no longer want to do music.
“But Maji Maji was telling me ‘let’s just do it’. Then I told Maji, I think we are Unbwogable. I am unbwogable. it was more to motivate myself,” he added.
Bwogo is a Luo word meaning ‘scary’, so ‘Unbwogable’ was meant to mean ‘you can’t scare me’
Gidi also celebrated that the song they made to motivate themselves became so popular that even politicians took it for their political slogan.
“Politicians jumped on it. It was played on all the radio stations. There are many stories about that song that I can’t even explain,” he said.
The musician singer reckoned that the song gave them great respect even in the world music industry, revealing that they were even called by an international music company, Galo Records, which talked to them about how African Urban Music was about to take off.
