The COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has chimed in on the GSU Security detail getting pulled from Deputy President William Samoei Ruto’s residence faulting the government for the same.
Atwoli believes that it was only right for the government to have informed the Deputy President formally about the change of security guard stressing that he doesn’t support what the government did as he maintains that security of any Kenyan shouldn’t be compromised at all, no matter what.
“When it comes to the security of any Kenyan, don’t compromise. And I equally don’t support what the government did.
If they were to change that security they would have done it with the knowledge of our deputy president because we don’t want these lame excuses being blamed on the government because of the security of other people.
What they should normally do is that they will come and discuss with you and tell you ‘we are trying to change these officers for this reason’…. You should not come home and find new faces in your home. You might even run away from that home,” said the COTU boss.
Francis Atwoli however called on the Deputy President to resign if he is unhappy with the govt.
This statement comes after the GSU officers who were stationed officially at William Ruto’s Karen residence were replaced with officers from the Security of Government Buildings Unit(SGB). This move sparked heated and different reactions from Kenyans everywhere.
Boda Boda men at DP Ruto’s residence in Sugoi took it upon themselves to offer security at Deputy President’s residence in huge numbers.
The Office of the Deputy President termed the change as unlawful and maintained that Ruto had not offered any explanation for the decision.
“The office of the DP has formally written to the IG, seeking an official explanation on this matter and reason for the breach of security,” stated David Mugonyi, the DPs communication secretary.
“This is the latest installment in a sustained and systematic effort to undermine the Deputy President’s personal security in pursuit of political vendetta, and is consistent with a strategy to expose the DP of the Republic to personal harm.”
The National Police Service spokesperson Bruno Shioso said the change of guard was a “normal re-assignment of duties within the National Police Service to enhance efficiency and effectiveness,” defending the move of changing the security detail for the DP.
“Today, August 26, 2021, the Security of Government Buildings (SGB) has been deployed to provide general security in the official residence of H.E the Deputy President from General Service Unit (GSU),” said Mutyambai in a statement signed by police spokesman Bruno Shiosho.
