It’s safe to say that reggae music in Kenya has been marginalized to some extent even though we have awesome talent in that genre, not many radio stations in Kenya plays reggae and local reggae music to be precise and thus we don’t have any exposure in the genre.
Talents like Freeman, Ras Mtapa, Lavosti and Levy Sill just to name but a few artistes are a bunch of massive talents that can take not only Kenyan but East African reggae music to higher heights because of what they can offer if only they would be given a chance to do exactly that. Currently, almost everybody in the country knows of Vybz Kartel, Mavado, Popcaan, Culture and don’t know anything about the Kenyan reggae artistes, that’s just too shameful because we are keen on perpetuating internal acts while we step on our very own talent right here.
We need to change no doubt.
The other day, Kenyan artistes took to the street to demand local stations to play 70% of local music so that at least we get to embrace our music regardless, we have to at least appreciate our own and show support and paramount of all, let’s be true patriots of Kenya and promote our very own music.
