Nairobi’s religious circles have been rocked by a “holy” scandal after gospel singer Emmy Kosgei delivered a scathing exposure of the double lives led by some of the city’s top pastors.
In a viral video shared online, the ‘Taai’ hitmaker recalled a conversation she had while traveling on a Kenya Airways (KQ) flight.
According to Kosgei, a member of the airline staff revealed that several well-known pastors are regulars at exclusive clubs in Nairobi’s affluent suburbs, where they indulge in a lifestyle far removed from their Sunday morning sermons.
“This lady told me, ‘Do you know how many of our staff go and hang out with some Nairobi pastors in clubs?'” Kosgei shared.
“In exclusive clubs in the suburbs… they go, they drink, they are there for pleasure.”
The most damning part of Kosgei’s critique focused on the contrast between the pastors’ Saturday night activities and their Sunday morning performances.
She mocked the dramatic way some preachers claim to hear from God after a night on the town.
“Sunday comes and it’s ‘Ohh, the Holy Spirit told me… the Lord told me to tell five people!’ Where did the Lord say?” Kosgei questioned, suggesting that many congregants are being misled by fabricated prophecies.
Kosgei argued that many Christians would fail if their private lives were suddenly made public. She noted that while God is merciful, the level of hypocrisy within the modern church is reaching a breaking point.
“If God can open our private lives, and put a ‘righteousness meter’ in our blood, many Christians would fail,” she warned.
The exposure comes as a major blow to the image of Nairobi’s “celebrity” pastors, who often flaunt wealth and piety while maintaining massive followings.
While no specific names were mentioned, the “clubbing pastor” claims have already sent the Kenyan internet into a frenzy of speculation.
