On 13th August 2019, Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) disbursed royalties to musicians via M-Pesa, most artistes were each paid Ksh 2,530 as their two months earnings.

The meagre payment from MCSK sparked uproar from many artistes who felt cheated. The likes of Khaligraph Jones and King Kaka openly protested the payments.

While disgruntled Kenyan musicians came out to publicly condemn MCSK over the poor pay, Dubai based Kenyan rapper Gkon is satisfied with what he was given by MCSK.

“MCSK should clean its house vizuri. So that artistes get good pay according to their work …”

Gkon however noted that in future the royalties collection body should make public their total collection before distributing royalties to musicians.

“MCSK should clean its house vizuri. So that artistes get good pay according to their work. They also need to be more transparent and explain to us what’s their total collection, budget, expenditures and through that we will be more contented in future,” said Gkon.
