Drake was met with an unexpectedly chilly reception during a Limp Bizkit concert in his hometown of Toronto as fans turned to boos when the band’s frontman, Fred Durst, acknowledged the rapper’s presence in the crowd.
As Durst took the mic, he excitedly announced, “Did you know Drake’s here tonight?”.
However, rather than receiving applause, the Canadian rapper was met with a chorus of boos.
“I thought Drake was your homie? What? No? Drake’s my homie,” Durst tried to defuse the tension, but the crowd’s negative reaction persisted.
In a viral clip shared on TikTok on Friday, July 27, 2024, a fan can be heard shouting, “F*** you,” illustrating the crowd’s hostility toward the Grammy-winning artist.
Durst then attempted to lighten the mood by dedicating the band’s classic track, “Take a Look Around,” to Drake, saying, “Since Drake’s here — he’s over here on the side — we’re gonna do this one for him.”
The incident sparked mixed reactions online, with fans expressing surprise at the rapper’s unwelcoming experience in Toronto, while others seemed to predict such a response given the dynamics between the artists.
This incident marks a repeat of an uncomfortable moment for Drake, who faced a similar fate back in November 2019 when he was booed offstage during Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
At that time, Drake took to Instagram with a lighthearted comeback, stating, “Plot twist…just signed a 10 year residency at Camp Flog Gnaw sorry kids, see you EVERY SINGLE YEAR till you are 30.”
The juxtaposition of booing Drake in his own city raises questions about the local reception of an artist who has achieved remarkable global success.
It also evokes biblical scripture Mark 6:4 “Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is treated with honor everywhere except in his own hometown, among his relatives, and in his own house’.”
As social media continues to buzz with reactions to this latest concert moment, it remains to be seen how the rapper will navigate these mixed sentiments from his hometown crowd.
