Donn J released his debut body of work in an EP which he dubbed ‘Beach Boi’ because he wants to change the narrative that most people are used to, especially in the coastal region.
“I chose the title Beach Boi specifically as I explained in the intro because it’s something that was considered negative back in the day when I was growing up.” Donn J opened up to Biggest Kaka exclusively.
He went on to add, “Being called a Beach Boi was considered an insult so I wanted to coin that phrase into something different.
Something that I was and is proud of being called and hopefully, the EP turns the narrative around.”
Apart from his intentions of making sure that he has changed the stereotype associated with the name Beach Boy, Donn J also aimed at carving a name for himself as one of the best exports from Diani on his hip hop project.
Donn J who owns his record label, Beach Boi records literally wrote the first song on the ‘Beach Boy’ EP on 22nd November, 1400hrs 2019 which is very significant to him and his family, that’s literally his late father’s anniversary.
“I started working on Beach Boi in 22nd November 2 pm 2019 (That’s literally when I wrote the first song).” Donn J who has a song together with Khaligraph Jones told Biggest Kaka.
“The date is special to me because it’s my late Dad’s anniversary so I chose that date specifically to draw inspiration and just create.”
Khaligraph Jones drops another hit as he introduces Donn J in the collabo
“Every song on the EP has its own story but when put together in the order we (me and my producer and beatmaker) did, there’s a certain flow that’s easy and doesn’t seem forced.” Donn J continued.
“I made Beach Boi as my official first body of work ever because I’ve only been doing singles and collabos until now and I wanted to give the fans something that was fully me and mine.”
Donn J features his mother on his long term friend, Breeder LW on the 5-track project that will forever be considered as one of the best rap projects to not only come from Kenya but from the entire East African region.
The ‘Shillingi’ hitmaker is a perfectionist when it comes to putting out his music because he wants to give his fans the bost body of work to his fans and that’s why he usually takes his time in releasing his singles in the music industry.
“I make music for everyone and that’s always been my goal, to give everyone something they can enjoy.
For me, music is more than recording and putting out.
It’s creating an experience that will reach more people and touch them in whatever way it’s meant to, whether it’s through the message or the mood at that moment. Beach Boi.” Donn J said.
Donn J might be one of the very few perfectionists in the music industry who usually makes sure his music is way above par, with good mastering and of course, when it comes to metaphors, rhymes, bars, and delivery plus lyricism Donn has that on lock.
