The Kenyan gospel fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the tragic passing of Joyce Wanjiru Karumba, the beloved wife of renowned entertainer DJ Krowbar (Karumba Ngatia).
The mother of three had fought a courageous battle with chronic kidney failure since her initial diagnosis in April 2022.
The tragedy comes just months after the family celebrated a “miracle” kidney transplant in mid-2025, which was followed by unforeseen medical complications.
In a heartbreaking statement released on Monday morning, the family confirmed that Joyce—affectionately known as “Joy”—succumbed to medical complications at 3:00 am on Monday, January 26, 2026.
Her death marks the end of a grueling four-year health journey that the couple had documented with raw honesty, inspiring thousands of followers across East Africa.
“Joy demonstrated immense courage and faith throughout a challenging health journey,” the family stated.
“We find comfort knowing she is now at perfect peace.”

The family’s nightmare began in April 2022, when Joyce was first diagnosed with acute kidney injury.
The condition rapidly escalated into chronic kidney failure, requiring regular and exhausting dialysis sessions.
Throughout the ordeal, DJ Krowbar remained his wife’s fiercest advocate, frequently taking to social media to share the physical and emotional toll of the disease.
In mid-2025, the family’s prayers appeared to have been answered when Joyce successfully underwent a long-awaited kidney transplant.
However, the “miracle” was short-lived. Following the procedure, Joyce faced a series of setbacks, including a severe infection toward the end of 2025.
Although she was briefly discharged for two weeks in early January, her health deteriorated significantly upon her return home, leading to her final admission.

The Karumba family, anchored by their deep Christian faith, expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support they have received over the years. Joyce is survived by her husband and their three young children: Toria, Riri, and Imani.
“The family is united in grief but anchored by their faith,” the statement continued.
“We kindly ask for your prayers, your love, and your respect for our privacy as we gather to make arrangements.”
As the gospel industry reels from the news, fellow celebrities including DJ Mo, Size 8, and Daddy Owen have led the tributes, praising Joyce for her “unshakable spirit.”
The family has opened a fund to assist with the upcoming funeral arrangements. Well-wishers can send their contributions via M-PESA Paybill 481505 (Account Name: Your Name; Reference: Joy Wa Karumba Farewell).
For many, Joyce Karumba will be remembered not for her illness, but for the grace with which she carried her cross. As her husband once poignantly noted during her treatment: “She is the strongest person I know.”
