A self-driving car, also known as an autonomous car, driverless car, or robotic car (robo-car), is a car that is capable of traveling without human input.

Driverless taxis first took to the streets of San Francisco in October 2022.

These taxis are equipped with advanced sensors, cameras, radar, lidar, and artificial intelligence (AI) software to navigate and transport passengers to their desired destinations safely.

The concept of driverless taxis is part of the broader development of autonomous vehicles, where technology companies and automakers are working to bring self-driving cars to the market.

The ultimate goal is to provide a convenient, efficient, and safe transportation solution that reduces the need for human drivers and the associated risks of human error.

Several companies have been actively researching and testing driverless taxi services. Some well-known players in this space include Waymo (a subsidiary of Google), Tesla, Uber (now part of Aurora), Cruise (owned by General Motors), and others.

The potential benefits of driverless taxis include improved safety as autonomous vehicles have the potential to significantly reduce accidents caused by human error, making roads safer for everyone.

However, the deployment of driverless taxis also comes with challenges. Ensuring the safety and reliability of autonomous systems remains a significant concern.

Regulatory and legal frameworks must also be developed to govern their operation, liability, and insurance issues.
