South Africa has been hit by a spate of violent attacks on foreigners living there. So far at least five people have been killed in the surge of xenophobic violence.
Many unemployed locals are blaming immigrants from mostly Nigeria, Zambia, Lesotho, Mozambique and Zimbabwe for taking away their jobs.
In the past few days, mobs burned and looted shops in various cities across South Africa while at the same time attacking foreigners whom they refer to as ‘makwerekwere’.
Nigerian musician Burna Boy took to Twitter to express his frustration with the xenophobic violence in South Africa. In one of his tweets, the Nigerian singer said that he will never set his foot in South Africa.
“I have not set foot in SA since 2017. And I will NOT EVER go to South Africa again for any reason until the SOUTH AFRICAN government wakes the fuck up and really performs A miracle because I don’t know how they can even possibly fix this,” Burna Boy tweeted.
In another tweet, Burna Boy attacked South African rapper AKA whom he accused of fueling xenophobic attacks on Nigerians. The exchange began after another Nigerian rapper YCee accused AKA of inciting xenophobic violence in his tweets that were posted when South Africa lost 2-1 to Nigeria in Africa Cup of Nations quarter final match.
“And @MI_Abaga it’s Fuck @akaworldwide from now on. And if you down with him, it’s F$ck you too. I respect you too much, please Don’t throw my respect out the window cuz I swear you will fly out with it,” Burna Boy tweeted.
AKA shared a photo of himself draped in Nigerian national flag while replying to YCee and Burna Boy.
