Kenya’s Edwin Okong’o, the gold medalist in the middleweight category at the African Games, secured a knockout victory against Mahamadou Gory of Mali in a light heavyweight bout during the second leg of the World Olympic Qualifiers in Thailand.

The win marks a promising start for the Kenyan team as the country vie for spots in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Okong’o delivered a decisive blow, ending the match in the first round of the round of 64. Deputy coach David Munuhe lauded Okong’o’s performance, describing him as a standout boxer with exceptional skills.

According to Munuhe, although Gory demonstrated polished boxing skills, Okong’o’s experience and form proved too formidable for his opponent.

Looking ahead, Okong’o is set to face off against Ganzorio Dalal of Mongolia in the round of 32, with hopes running high within the Kenyan camp.

Deputy captain Boniface Mogunde, a bronze medallist at the Africa Boxing Championships, is slated to compete against Walsh Aiden of Ireland on Sunday, further adding to Kenya’s prospects in the tournament.
