The family of popular gospel singer Betty Bayo has formally opened a new front in their fight for answers, writing a strongly worded letter to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) demanding a full investigation into the circumstances of her sudden death.

Betty Bayo, whose real name was Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, died on November 10 at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi.

While initial reports cited a long battle with leukaemia as the cause, her mother is now publicly challenging that narrative, claiming a foul play cover-up.

Through the legal firm of Omenke and Andeje and Company Advocates, the singer’s distressed mother, Joyce Mbugua, has formally requested an inquest, citing overwhelming suspicions about how her daughter died.

In the letter addressed to the DPP, Mbugua revealed the profound anguish the family has endured, particularly given the suddenness of the loss.

Kanyari and Betty Bayo got married in 2012 but parted ways shortly after the November 2014 exposé by Mohammed Ali which revealed the preacher was performing fake miracles. Betty Bayo remarried in December 2021.

“The family has had to go through unbearable pain in accepting the fact that the deceased, who had never exhibited any illness, would just die mysteriously,” the legal notice reads.

The mother then unleashed a series of sensational allegations, claiming they suspect “an evil hand” was involved in Bayo’s death, emphatically stating that the singer had no prior underlying medical condition that would explain her demise.

Most damningly, the mother questioned the speed of the singer’s burial, alleging it was a deliberate attempt to conceal the true cause of death.

The family further revealed that they have been blocked from obtaining critical information:

The family claims they were explicitly refused a copy of the postmortem findings.

They also claimed that crucial records and information detailing the specific disease Betty Bayo was supposedly being treated for before her death have allegedly been withheld.

The family is now invoking the Kenyan Constitution, calling on the DPP to direct the Inspector General of Police to “urgently move with speed and institute an inquest” into the entire matter.

“The family thus express their utmost disdain, and thus demands that you hereby direct the Inspector General to urgently move with speed and institute an inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua – alias Betty Bayo,” the letter, dated December 9, 2025, concluded.

The escalation of this deeply personal tragedy into a high-stakes legal probe ensures that the mystery surrounding the passing of the beloved gospel singer will continue to dominate national attention.
