Many of us may know friends or relatives who have been driving while under the influence. Don’t lie, you may eevn have done it once.
Robert Wambugu is one such drunk. But his explanation for driving while high on alcohol takes the cake. He had been caught by NTSA officers along the Eldoret-Kitale highway for causing an accident. He was later found to be intoxicated.
His incredulous defence was that he drives best while he is drunk. That he is a very stable drunk. Oh really!
He also added that in 30 years of driving he had never caused an accident despite taking two for the road on most occasions saying,” I only had that slight incident, which left my car with a minor scratch but I was not to blame. The other motorist was the problem. He openly diverted towards my lane forcing me to swerve” Oh really?
The court asked Wambugu to produce receipts to prove that he had taken two beers, but he said he had lost it. “If allowed I can go to the bar I drunk and bring the cash sale receipt duplicate,” he said making the court burst into fits of laughter. Oh really?
The judge ruled: “It is dangerous to drive under the influence of alcohol because the consequences may lead to loss of your life and that of others.”
It went on: “How much will 100 bottles of your favourite drink cost? Multiply Sh160 by 100 bottles for your freedom or else spend 30 days in jail.”
