In a candid side chat during his recent event in Dar es Salaam, Bongo Flava star Alikiba made striking remarks about the ongoing protests in Kenya, lauding the patriotism of Kenyans and contrasting it with what he perceives as the lackluster activism in his home country, Tanzania.
“On every level of patriotism, we have nothing on Kenyans. Tanzanians, we don’t even come close. While we speak with empty words, Kenyans speak with actions,” Ali Kiba said, responding to a question about the recent upheavals in Kenya.
The singer expressed admiration for the zeal and commitment of Kenyans, particularly the youth, in holding their government accountable.
“The simple truth is that Kenyans are more patriotic than us Tanzanians and I don’t think we will ever come close. You can see it clearly with the protests. In Tanzania, nobody can stand up to the government like we have seen in Kenya. We are good at empty talk; Kenyans do it with action and zeal,” he added.
Alikiba, who has deep ties to Kenya through his music career and family, shared his personal connection to the country and his support for the protesters.
“Apart from having a family in Kenya, Kenya has always been my second home since the beginning of my career. It has shaped my career in one way or another and it’s a place I visit quite often. For me to support the protests, I spoke to some Kenyans and the general feeling is that they are hurting.”
Alikiba’s estranged Kenyan wife, Amina Khaleef, with whom he shares two children, has kept a low profile since their split. She filed for divorce on January 8, 2021, citing negligence on his part.
Despite personal challenges, Alikiba’s remarks indicate a profound respect for the resilience and activism of the Kenyan people.
As the protests continue to unfold, Alikiba’s statements resonate with many who see Kenya’s current political climate as a testament to the power of collective action and patriotism.
