For those of you who have been living under a rock this past week, police violence has been the in-thing. The fashion must have them for this season is how far( beating, shooting e.t.c) you can go in performing your duties. I know, many of this alleged cases are yet to be proved in a court of law. But I am a firm subscriber to the idiom, where there is smoke there is fire.
So what exactly is going on in this story? Kenneth Mutuma popularly known for his roles in The Real Househelps of Kawangware and is also with the MYAP theatre was shot in the leg.
What happened is described succinctly and very somberly by his friend Wyclef Muthomi in a post on social media:
“Last week after working at Royal media he boarded a Matatu to town. Unbeknown to him police were pursuing the Matatu with claims that it had thieves. The police opened fire and began shooting indiscriminately. Tush was shot on the leg and left on the road to bleed out.
As is common with Nairobians nobody offered to help him and as he struggled to drag himself a boda boda guy passing saw he was bleeding out and took him to Nazareth health facility where First aid was administered and then transferred to Kenyatta National hospital.
He was taken to surgery where after the first operation his leg was found to be unresponsive and sadly yesterday it was amputated just below the knee.
The police who shot him are keeping guard at the hospital one in the morning the other in the evening. They claim Tush is an armed Robber and have heaped 7 counts against him including robbery with violence. Tush is not from a rich or influential family, just like many people languishing in jail because of careless police and a system that barely works, shoddy investigation might be done and the rest will be history.”
If what Wyclef is saying is ture then this is truly sad. I hope that the police did not bungle this operation and have now consigned an innocent man to having to use crutches for the rest of his life.
