The Human Rights Association (HRA) has called for a full, independent, and transparent investigation into the death of Israel Ashitei Kamoah, a 25-year-old Ghanaian graduate who died in South Africa under controversial circumstances.
Kamoah travelled to South Africa on March 25, 2026, reportedly through arrangements made by an individual identified as Edith, who handled his travel documents, visa, and flight logistics. The trip was allegedly linked to the Millennium Supporters Union of Ghana (MISUGHA), with promises of attending a football match and potential employment opportunities.
Just a day before his death on March 30, Kamoah reportedly contacted a family member, sharing details of the woman who organized his trip and expressing concern for his safety. His body was repatriated to Ghana on April 1, with initial reports from South African authorities attributing the death to suicide.
However, the case has taken a troubling turn following claims by the family. Upon examination of the body at a mortuary in Ghana, relatives reported that key internal organs, including the heart, lungs, and liver, were missing. Additionally, the family alleges possession of CCTV footage showing Kamoah being forcibly removed against his will prior to his death.

These revelations have raised serious concerns about possible foul play, including allegations of organ trafficking and extrajudicial killing. The family initially reported the matter to local police in Ghana, but the case was reportedly closed after preliminary investigations. It has since been escalated to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further review.
HRA Chairman Saad Kassis-Mohamed strongly criticized the handling of the case, emphasizing inconsistencies in the official account and the need for accountability.
“Israel Ashitei Kamoah was a young man with his entire future ahead of him. He was 25 years old. He sent a warning to his family the day before he died. His body was returned without vital organs. A police inquiry was opened and closed without adequate accountability. This is not a matter that can be allowed to rest.”
“The HRA demands a full, independent, and cross-jurisdictional investigation and will not cease in its advocacy until the family of Israel Ashitei Kamoah receives the answers and the justice they deserve.”
The organization is urging South African authorities, including the police and prosecuting bodies, to reopen the investigation and conduct a thorough review of the post-mortem findings and available evidence. It is also calling on the Government of Ghana to provide full support to the family and ensure diplomatic engagement with South Africa.
In addition, the HRA has appealed to relevant United Nations Special Rapporteurs to intervene, particularly those focusing on extrajudicial killings and human trafficking. The group says it will continue advocating for justice until the family receives clear answers.
The association has also called on all individuals and organizations involved in facilitating Kamoah’s travel to cooperate fully with investigators and provide all relevant documentation.
The case has drawn growing attention due to its cross-border implications and the serious allegations involved, with pressure mounting on authorities in both Ghana and South Africa to ensure a transparent and credible investigation.
