KQ: 8 demands made by the striking Kenya Airways pilots

The Kenya Airways, KQ pilots strike has collapsed operations at the airline as thousands of travelers are left in confusion, bitterness and pain as they count loses incurred as a result of interruption to their business trips and meetings.

Hon Captain Ronald Karauri, the MP for Kasarani says, Allan Kilavuka, CEO KQ(Kenya Airways) is not fit for the position.

This comes after Mr Kilavuka went on record to say that the strike will cost Kenya Airways billions of Kenyan shillings if it continues for a week.

“If the strike continues for a week, it will cost KQ Kes 2 Billion, and if you extrapolate, it will cost Kenya Airways Kes 8 to 10 Billion monthly,” Mr. Allan Kilavuka said.

Hon Karauri, MP and SportPesa chief executive officer (CEO), also a former pilot and whose wife Ruth Karauri is still an active pilot had something to say about the current affairs of Pilot strike.

“So this guy knew all this, but decided to allow the strike to happen, then look for sympathy when the planes are grounded.

If the only thing you can do is calculate losses, you do not deserve that job. If you sincerely want the strike to end, you know exactly what to do,” Karauri said.

On Saturday, 400 pilots who are members of the Kenya Airline Pilots Association (KALPA) went on strike.

List of demands made by the Kenya Airways pilots on strike:

1. Provident Fund: The pilots demand that the fund, which comprises company and employee contributions as well as fines and interest, be immediately reinstated.
2. Pilots and union representatives whose contracts were terminated should be reinstated. Additionally, KALPA has called for an end to the victimization and harassment of union representatives.
3. KQ will pay the interest and penalties on the initial loans that accumulated during the time of reduced pay.
4. Retraction of the official letters and show-cause notices sent by the previous Chief Pilot.
5. The Chief Pilot post will be re-advertised, and a fair hiring procedure will be ensured.
6. Fair competition will be used in the hiring process.
7. Calculation of vacation days in accordance with a 2020 Labor Court decision.
8. Six senior KQ employees employment terminated. In order to give CEO Allan Kilavuka the opportunity to continue leading the organization while a suitable replacement is sought, the association claimed it had reexamined its decision to fire him in good faith.
