The indigenous African church famously known as the Akorino is solely unique among many of their kind.
To this day, the Akorino remain on the list of the few, who didn’t sever significant ties with any Missions in or from the West.
At the time when numerous Missionionaries from all corners of the world came to Kenya to preach and spread the good Gospel, the Akorinos were those who were hesitant to be swayed in that direction.
The Agikuyu traditional religion’s un-churched population is believed to have produced the first generation of Akorino adherents.
Akorino has gone by a variety of names and monikers throughout the years. The First President of Kenya, the founding father of the Republic of Kenya, the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta referred to them as, Watu wa Mungu (People of God) or Arathi (Prophets).
There are also other names like Wagithomo (followers or adherents of the book) which are commonly used nowadays.
This implies that the community’s perception from outside eyes looking in on their growth has since grown in matters of religion, life, business, and other social economy activities. Almost everybody now from within and without the country appreciates them and lets them live their lives the best way they know how without any outside force trying to meddle in their affairs.
Although still very conservative and attached to the pillars of their beliefs, the Akorino never shies from living life.
They are very successful in business and music, and as a result, young Akorino men and women have cut themselves a piece in Kenya’s celebrity lifestyle space, fashion, acting, and their music; which is iconic and done mainly in the Kikuyu dialect.
The Akorino now utilizes a set of drums and a keyboard instead of the traditional ndarama (drums) and karing’aring’a (metallic ring used as a musical instrument). However, sometimes incorporation of both is still effective.
For the women, it’s easy to notice and spot them even from afar with their long pleated dresses and with their rather unique trademark white turban.
