How Police easily tracked down 4 accomplices in Ksh94.9M Wells Fargo heist as main suspects are still at large

Daniel Mungai Mugetha and Anthony Nduiki Waigumo, the main suspects in the Ksh94.9 million Wells Fargo heist, are still missing even as police pounced on their accomplices.

Detectives arrested Ismael Patrick Gitonga, Michael Matolo Njeru, Samwel Onyango and Martin Nderi Nganga all of whom helped the main suspects flee.

Police first arrested Ismael Patrick Gitonga who directed them to the hideouts of the three others involved in the Wells Fargo heist.

How did the police link Gitonga to the Wells Fargo heist?

Gitonga is the owner and driver of motor vehicle registration number KBM 751W Toyota Fielder that carried the Ksh94.9 million loot.

The two main suspects Daniel Mungai Mugetha, the crew commander, and the driver Anthony Nduiki Waigumo drove Wells Fargo truck loaded with Ksh94.9 million from company’s Nairobi offices at 6 am on Monday November 6, 2023, shortly after the money box was loaded, leaving behind the police escort car that was waiting to be flagged off.

The truck was destined for a bank located at Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi to deposit the money.

However, the duo drove the Wells Fargo truck to Dafarm in South C, Nairobi where Gitonga’s Toyota Fielder was waiting for them.

They loaded the money into the Fielder before they disappeared.

The BIGGEST mistake that the crew did was using the Toyota Fielder which was not stolen or hired using fake ID.

The Toyota Fielder is owned by Ismael Patrick Gitonga, even an ordinary Kenyan only needs to login to NTSA website and key in the car’s number plate and all the registration details is revealed.

The crew underestimated the power of the CCTV cameras installed all over Nairobi major roads – and this his how police got them.

When police found out that the Toyota Fielder was used as the getaway car after analyzing the CCTV footage, they ran the plates and found its owner.

After running the plates, police knew who they were looking for and that’s how they arrested Ismael Patrick Gitonga within Rongai.

Following his arrest, Gitonga led police to Njiru within Kayole area where the Toyota Fielder was being hidden.

During the raid in Njiru, police arrested Michael Matolo Njeru and Samwel Onyango who were in the process of modifying the Toyota Fielder to conceal its identity.

The three, Gitonga, Samwel and Michael, then led police to Kasarani where the fourth suspect Martin Nderi Nganga was arrested with some of the stole money from the Wells Fargo truck.

Martin was found with Ksh9.1 million in cash at his rented house.

The money was stashed in a suitcase and another in a plastic jerrycan.

Martin further led detectives to a forest next to Gataka market in Karen Estate where a cashbox was recovered.

Police are now hot in the trail of the two main suspects Daniel Mungai Mugetha and Anthony Nduiki Waigumo who are still at large.

Daniel and Anthony are believed to have paid the four accomplices in police custody 10 per cent of the Ksh94.9 million money they stole from Wells Fargo to help them execute the heist.

The money that was stolen belonged to Quickmart Supermarket and was in transit to Family Bank.

If Daniel and Anthony made stupid mistakes like their four accomplices, then it’s only a matter of time before police also arrest them.
