This morning, three students from Egerton University were arraigned in court for defrauding parents and KCSE candidates of millions of shillings by using Telegram forums to sell them exam materials.
Detectives with the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) began investigating the scam last week and have so far arrested three people working at the Njoro campus of Nakuru University, Nakuru County.
The ringleader of the conspiracy, Kelvin Anunda Mogaka, known as Professor Lenchodas, a 4th year Bachelor of Science in Education Mathematics & Physics, was ensnared in a trap and taken to his Njoro home on Thursday night.
Mogaka, who lives well in a furnished apartment, is said to have stolen millions of shillings from parents who parted with between Kes 5,000 and Kes 20,000 in order to help their children steal the exam, through two telegram groups with over 13,000 followers.
The investigators put an end to the scheme when they seized dozens of SIM cards and identity cards from the suspect’s home, which he had used to open fake MPESA and bank accounts. As a result, the money that he received was deposited into his brother’s Equity Bank Kisii branch account, who is a teacher at Mogongo Girls Secondary School, a large sum of money was discovered by the detectives. In addition, they discovered that the suspect also operated an account at the Kisii KCB branch.
The suspects were arraigned at Milimani law courts this morning and released on a Kes 1 million bond or Kes 500,000 with a surety of the same amount.
The Ministry of Education & Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) officials have created intricate procedures to protect the legitimacy of administering the upcoming KCPE and KCSE exams, in order to prevent the kind of misconduct that occurred during the previous national exam.
