KCB issues statement on Thika Branch 50M grand heist

In Thika, thugs reportedly broke into the strong room of KCB Thika Branch and make away with Sh50m. The manager says cash vaults were accessed through underground tunnel.

The incident was reported at the Kiambu County Thika West Division Thika Police Station.

Details acquired from the police station read Bank Burglary and Stealing Report.

The KCB Thika Branch manager Thika Branch Mr. Samuel Nganga  of mobile 0721****** reported today 20.11.2017 at 0830 hrs that he opened the bank strong room this morning only to realise that unknown thieves had accessed the Vault strong room  through an underground tunnel and stole approximately ksh 50,000,000/=.

They broke into two safes and are believed to have used oxy-Acytelene flame to drill holes into the safes. Scene visited by Ocpd Dcio Dapc Ocs Oc crime and the scenes of crime personnel. Investigations have commenced. No arrest or recovery made. Case P.U.I.

Police have launched investigations into the KCB Thika Branch 50M heist.

The Bank has issued a statement via its official Facebook page:

KCB Bank Kenya confirms the discovery of a break-in at the Thika Branch this morning. The relevant authorities have been informed and investigations are ongoing. 
We wish to assure all our customers that their funds are safe and there is no cause for alarm. Customers seeking to transact can do so at any other KCB branch or access services through our mobile and internet banking platforms.

Banks used to experience armed robbery incidents in the 1990s, but things have changed.

The difference is in both the script and the cast; the actors are no longer the armed thugs targeting cash on transit.

The very people in charge of protecting the cash, and their accomplices, are the culprits.

Kenya Commercial Bank chief executive Joshua Oigara attributed the trend to changes in career aspirations, the desire for a high lifestyle and peer pressure associated with young people, who are the majority of bank employees today he told the press, a while back.

In 2012 October one gangster was shot dead while his colleagues escaped with bullet wounds after a shootout with police as they attempted to rob a bank along Tom Mboya Avenue in Nairobi.

The suspects had entered Kenya Commercial Bank using the rear door at around 2am and later used a gas cylinder to break the doors and the strong room. But they failed to penetrate into the vault. No money was stolen from the bank.
