Kenya’s tireless journalists have been covering the recent anti-IEBC demonstrations that have resulted in running battles between policemen and the demonstrators. Whichever side you fall on as regards the demonstrations, there is some collateral damage that is unacceptable.

Children should not suffer when a demonstration happens. I know that this sentiment envisions a world that is full of unicorns and rainbows. But can’t we strive for better as a citizenry. This story happens only because an innocent child had trouble breathing after inhaling tear gas during the anti-IEBC demonstrations at Uhuru Park.

The toddler and the mother are said to have been caught up in the melee and developed complications once they inhaled teargas that was lobbed to the demonstrators. Nairobi County government has banned any gatherings at Uhuru Park owing to the ongoing preparations at the venue for the 2017 Mashujaa Day on Friday.

The journalists offered the mother and the baby, who nearly collapsed as a result of the gas, some water. Whatever way you vote, this was something exceptional that the journalists did, considering that their work is only to document, not be the story. Oh well! Life goes on!
